West Virginia is not necessarily the most culturally diverse place in the nation. No need to look around nervously, it's not. However, Charleston--the state capital--has become a hub of culture for the Wild and Wonderful. Still not as diverse as other major cities (New York, Atlanta, Chicago, etc) it still makes an effort to recognize and appreciate the diversity that it does contain. The annual celebration known as Multifest is once again upon us. The first Friday of August (August 6th) begins a three-day festival of family fun, fellowshipping, music, art, shopping, and information. This is a chance for citizens to explore, for a moment, cultures different from their own. Held on the grounds of the Capitol Complex provides a beautiful backdrop for the event and sends a subliminal message that we can all unite and understand one another under the iconic golden dome. ![]() This year, the headlining entertainment is top notch. Multifest is bringing in J Holiday, known for his song, "Bed," old school R&B group, The Main Ingredient, known for their smash hit, "Everybody Plays the Fool," and a crooner from my generation Johnny Gill, known for replacing Bobby Brown in New Edition and being Eddie Murphy's lover (according to ![]() Sponsors for Multifest 2010 include: City of Charleston, West Virginia State University, Pepsi, West Virginia Lottery, Kroger's, Suddenlink and many other heavy hitters. The mission of Multifest is to enrich the lives of those we serve by providing a venue to celebrate diversity for all citizens in our region through art, music, education, cultural programs and cuisine. Come out and support a great tradition in multiculturalism. And above all else, please don't be a dick.
